What is the thinking behind the Portal?
The Emergency Management Portal contains guidance, news, legislation and a lot more. Much of this is UK-centric, in particular relevant legislation and many of the useful links. The guidance, on the other hand, can be useful to practitioners anywhere. The saying 'don't reinvent the wheel' is often used by emergency planners when writing plans. There is every reason why planners should compare notes or look for good practice wherever it comes from to save them working through the same issues.
AIMED AT THE UK
The Portal looks for good practice anywhere in the world and publishes it for the benefit mainly of UK emergency planners, so that they can take it into account in their work. One example is the ability of Canadian planners to cope with severe winter weather. Their practices can be of immense use to UK planners who traditionally do not face severe conditions every year.
SUITABLE FOR OTHER COUNTRIES, TOO
Because some of the challenges faced by practitioners wherever they are in the world and whatever sector they are can be the same, professionals from around the world subscribe to our weekly email bulletin to make use of the Portal's resources on a routine basis.
WHO IS IT AIMED AT?
Emergency planning and management practitioners, academics and students, worldwide.
