Canada and USA meet to discuss critical infrastructure resilience
Country: Canada and USA

Canada’s Public Safety Minister, Vic Toews, concluded a successful three-day visit to Washington D.C. to advance meaningful initiatives with senior officials within the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress.
Last week, Minister Toews and U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, met for the first of two meetings planned for this year to address border and security issues. Minister Toews and Secretary Napolitano announced cooperative initiatives to advance a strategic dialogue on a shared vision for border security for Canada and the United States.
“Our Government continues to work with the Obama Administration to achieve the twin objectives of protecting our citizens from mutual threats and promoting the free-flow of legitimate trade and travel across our shared border,” said Minister Toews. “These constructive discussions have allowed us to build on previous action taken by our governments to address new and emerging mutual security concerns with practical and responsible solutions.”
Minister Toews and Secretary Napolitano also announced a first-ever plan to establish a comprehensive cross-border approach to critical infrastructure resilience.
"Vital systems like electrical grids, transportation networks, financial and telecommunication systems are at the backbone of our economy, security, health and our basic way of life," said Minister Toews. "Where our infrastructure is inter-linked, the Canada-United States Action Plan for Critical Infrastructure will enable both countries to more effectively address a range of cross border infrastructure issues. We must ensure that Canada’s vital assets and systems are protected and continue to be there when Canadians need them.”
Minister Toews and Secretary Napolitano are planning to hold their second formal meeting on border and security issues this November to further build on what has been accomplished and to continue to strengthen the cooperation between our two countries in a way that supports competitiveness, job creation and prosperity.
Minister Toews also met with Attorney General Eric Holder; Assistant to the President on Homeland Security and Counter-terrorism, John Brennan; Senator Joe Lieberman, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs; and several other senior officials.
