Earthquake Awareness Week

“Learn Plan, Prepare…the next big quake could be near!”

Jamaica’s location along the northern margin of the Caribbean Plate and the presence of very active faults on the island makes it very vulnerable to earthquakes.

To create greater awareness of this threat to the country, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) will be observing Earthquake Awareness Week under the theme: “Learn Plan,  Prepare…the next big quake could be near!” scheduled for 9-15 January 2010.

A series of activities have been planned to commemorate the Week, aimed at increasing the general awareness of the Jamaican public to the importance of preparing for an earthquake:

1. National Church Service:
This year’s National Church Service will be held at the Andrews Memorial Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 27 Hope Road, Kingston 10. The Service will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010 commencing at 11:00 a.m. and will be aired live and delayed on NationWide radio station and Fame FM respectively.

2. Regional Church Service:
This year’s regional Church Services will be held on Sunday 10, January 2010 at arious churches island wide, organized by the Regional Disaster Coordinators.

3. ODPEM/Jamaica Observer Earthquake Awareness Week Supplement
Once again, in partnership with the Jamaica Observer, the ODPEM will publish its first Earthquake Awareness Week 2010 Supplement in the Jamaica Observer on Monday 11, January 2010.

4. Tsunamis Workshop for Tourism Sector
The ODPEM will host a workshop on Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Bahia Principe Hotel in St. Ann. The workshop will place emphasis on Disaster Risk Management of the hotels located in costal zones vulnerability to Tsunamis. The workshop will also focus on training participants managing cultural heritage sites that could possibly be at risks.

5. ODPEM/Gleaner Earthquake Awareness Week Supplement:
Once again, in partnership with the Gleaner, itself a survivor of the January 14, 1907 Great Earthquake and Fire, the ODPEM will publish its second Earthquake Awareness Week 2010 Supplement in the Daily Gleaner on Tuesday 12, January 2010.

6. Earthquake Awareness Day in Schools:
This is an annual hazard awareness day, created specifically to better prepare our nation’s children, through schools, for an earthquake. This Day will be observed on Wednesday13, January 2010, and schools are encouraged to involve their students in earthquake awareness activities such as creating original items in song, dance, drama and poetry to express themselves about their vulnerabilities to earthquakes. ODPEM’s major event for this day is our annual Earthquake Awareness Week Open Day. See information below.

7. ODPEM Earthquake Awareness Open Day for Schools:
This year’s Open Day will take place on Wednesday 13, January 2010 at Old Naval Hospital in Port Royal, itself a testament of the effects of an earthquake having survived the Great June 7, 1692 Port Royal Earthquake. The activities for the Day will feature exhibits from several partner agencies and companies and talks given by ODPEM and several of its partner agencies, such as the Earthquake Unit and the Jamaica Fire Brigade (JFB).

8. Earthquake Awareness Day in Businesses:
This is an annual hazard awareness day that specifically targets the  earthquake preparedness needs of businesses. This Day will be observed on Thursday 14, January 2010. For this Day we encourage businesses to take time out to evaluate their level of preparedness and to ensure that staff and clients alike are aware of the necessary earthquake preparedness measures. Activities in this regard include earthquake drills and earthquake hazard hunts. Businesses are also welcome to contact the ODPEM concerning earthquake preparedness talks and presentations to their staff by the ODPEM Training Department.

9. Earthquake Awareness Day for ODPEM Staff:
A series of activities planned for ODPEM staff to culminate the activities for the week.
